ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Join a unique opportunity to engage in the preservation of Croatia’s cultural heritage by helping rebuild dry stone walls in Majkovi, a village 25 km northwest of Dubrovnik. These ancient walls, constructed solely from natural stones without the use of cement or other materials, are iconic
throughout Croatia’s coastline and hinterland. Their purpose extends beyond simple border marking—these walls have been vital for agricultural survival in the region for centuries.
Dry stone walls served multiple purposes:
Without these walls, agriculture—and thus survival—would have been impossible in this challenging terrain. However, many of these historical walls are in disrepair, threatening both the landscape and the preservation of a unique cultural tradition. By participating in this project, you will directly contribute to preventing soil erosion, restoring agricultural viability, and preserving a valuable piece of Mediterranean heritage.
You’ll work alongside local builders to rebuild sections of the dry stone walls. This hands-on activity combines learning, having fun, and practical contribution, as you’ll discover the ancient techniques passed down through generations. The knowledge you gain can even be applied to similar locations across the Mediterranean, making this project both locally impactful and globally relevant.
